McEntaggart’s treble for Newfoundwell in cup win

December 1945

-

Newfoundwell started firm favourites for this Leinster Junior Shield 3rd tie (Drogheda area final) and they certainly fully justified the confidence placed in them.

The high wind had an adverse effect on the football displayed and few of the players on view proved capable of overcoming the difficult task of controlling a fast travelling ball.

The second half brightened up somewhat and exchanges were more keenly and evenly contested. Newfoundwell was at all stages the superior combination and fully deserved their margin of victory. Farrell. playing at centre-half, was outstanding, while McCarthy and Barrett were sound fulls. McPhilips. in the nets, had little to do, but when called on acquitted himself well. McEntaggart. who scored a hattrick, and Hoey who together with McPhlllips, were the pick of the forwards. McGrane scored for Dunleer. Newfoundwell, winners of the Drogheda area, together with the winners of the Dundalk area, will probably be included in the Dublin City area for the fourth round draw of the Leinster Junior Shield competition.
