Millmount club are aiming high
ST Mary’s Diocesan School hosted a promotional handball fun day to encourage adults and children from the town to get involved in the sport.
Those who attended were treated to ladies and gents exhibition matches involving some of the top stars of GAA handball in the country.
These included Martina McMahon of Limerick, Megan McCann from Armagh, Tyrone man Sean Kerr and David Hope of Offaly, and Handball President Joe Masterson paid a visit as well.
After the matches there was the chance to meet the players as they performed and demonstrated the skills of handball.
“The purpose of the day was to raise the profile of GAA Handball in Drogheda. There is so much history with Joey Maher, Fintan Confrey and Paddy Reilly all being top players from the town in the past”, said John Kelly of Millmount Handball Club.
“Martina McMahon and Megan McCann are representing Ireland at the World Championships in Minnesota, and they have a great chance to win gold.”
Millmount Handball Club was formed in 2013. They currently train in Coca- Cola Hall in Drogheda Industrial Estate, but John says they are in negotiations with Louth County Council to get permission to build their own alley.
“We currently have around 40-50 members and hope to get more. If we do, we’ll need a bigger space. We want to get more participation in the town because there is such a strong tradition of GAA handball here.”
Members of the U13 boys’ team are travelling to Galway in mid June to take part in the Feile and the club is hopeful that they can do well.
There was a great turnout for the promotional day and the club hopes that it translates into increased membership for the club.
There was also facepainting for children and several spot prizes won and it was an enjoyable day for all who attended.
