Work begins on ‘Thatch’ project

-

RECONSTRUCTION works have begun on the old “Thatch” on Donore Road.

Having campaigned over a five year period for the conservation of this protected structure, which is one of only two cottages remaining intact in the town, Cllr Paul Bell feels it’s a much needed development.

“Having secured grant funding and support from Council and the property owner, works have commenced inside the building. Skilled conservation workers are restoring the walls of the building and the wooden beams which support the roof. The work is complex and absolutely essential for the rethatching of the roof which will commence hopefully this month or early June”, said Bell

Bell remarked “Having seen the wonderful work performed by Peter Childs our local Master Thatcher on Harty’s Cottage on Crushrod Avenue. I am really look forward to his creation on the Donore Road building. I am convinced that the work including the necessary white washing will be completed in time for the Fleadh and remember this cottage is located on Gateway route and as they say “first impressions last!
