Relegation fight could be settled off the pitch

-

AN ongoing appeals process over the alleged fielding of an ineligible player could see the second automatic relegation place in the NEFL Premier Division relegation battle settled off the pitch.

Last Sunday’s scheduled Premier/ Division 1 promotion/relegation play-off between Duleek and Athboy Celtic was postponed after Duleek protested to the NEFL following their 3-0 defeat by Ardee Celtic last month. They alleged that Ardee Celtic had used a player in that match who had played for a team in an unaffiliated competition.

The NEFL dismissed the protest and Duleek were informed as such, but Duleek then declared their intention to appeal that decision to the Leinster FA - a process that could take time, especially if either party availed of their right to appeal the LFA decision to the FAI.

As things stand, OMP United have been automatically relegated along with the bottom club Kingscourt Harps and Duleek are contesting the play-off, but should Duleek’s appeal be ultimately successful they would stay up, Ardee Celtic would drop to Division 1 and OMP United would take Duleek’s place in the promotion/relegation play-off.
