Spot-on Dromin land cup

DROMIN JUV GLENMUIR CELTIC

WHAT a corker of a game this was - and such a pity that either side had to lose after so lavishly entertaining the good crowd at a sunny and beautifully presented Bellew Park.

The Under-11 Group 2 cup decider on Saturday morning was non-stop pulsating action.

Brendan Cassidy was the one who spearheaded Dromin to victory, scoring two of his side’s goals and then firing home one of the two vital spot kicks in the shootout that followed after extra time had failed to separate the sides.

First up for Dromin in that shootout was Finn Carter and his coolly slotted spot-kick - after he had struck the net and then made to retake it - proved crucial, with Cassidy putting away their next kick.

Left-footer Cassidy had given a flash of the damage he was capable of as he raced past a number of defenders up the right wing to briefly lift the siege on his goal in the early minutes.

He sped past three opponents to take him clear inside the penalty box, only for Paudie McCabe to defy him with a double save.

It was nearly a case of ‘anything you can do I can do at least as well’ as Cassidy surged through the Glenmuir defence and struck the butt of the post.

Glenmuir went straight back to the other end where Sam Sweeney broke into plenty of space on the right and Imehiji cleverly dummied his low cross to leave Ferdia Myles King with a tap-in at the back post to make it 1-0.

Glenmuir went close to increasing their lead on his three different occasions, but instead Cassidy shocked them by equalising, He showed how dangerous he was again when he intercepted a free kick in midfield and surged through the middle to force a flying save out of Ciaran Moran.

Who else, then, than Cassidy to put Dromin ahead after eight minutes. From the resulting corner kick the ball fell to him on the edge Under 8:

But their lead lasted no more than seconds as from the kick-off Glenmuir attacked at the heart of the Dromin defence and TJ McCabe’s effort struck a defender and ended up in the net.

Dromin went back in front five minutes later when Finn Carter’s corner kick was fumbled by goalkeeper Moran and dropped over the goal-line, but the latter later made amends with a great save. Cassidy looked set to settle the outcome when he went on another
