JEM Matthews, who died recently, lived all his life in
Tully, Corcreaghy, Louth Village.
A founder member of Annaghminnon Rovers GFC, he passed away on 10 March, 2018.
Aged 89, he was a son of Bernard and Margaret Matthews, one of a family of seven, and attended Stonetown National School.
Jem worked in Hannah’s of Carrickmacross and for
Louth county council, along with looking after the land at home.
His main interests were politics, horse racing and Gaelic football. He was involved in the formation of Annaghminnon Rovers in 1959 and went on to win the Second Division Championship with the club in 1964.
In later years Jem was inducted into the Annaghminnon hall of fame.
Jem was predeceased by his parents, and by his brothers, Barney and Hughie; and sisters, Kathy and Peg.
He is survived by his sister, Nan and brother, Paddy; nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
After reposing at his nephew Brian Matthews’ home in Stonetown, Louth Village, Jem’s remains were removed to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Louth, where the funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr. Seán McArdle.
Readings were given by Rose Mackin and Margaret Mathers; and prayers of faithful led by Paula Reid and Oran Matthews.
Gifts were brought to the altar by Raymond Matthews and Olive Markey.
A guard of honour was formed by Annaghminnon Rovers for which the family is grateful, and also for the care Jem received in Our Lady of Lourdes and Louth County Hospitals.
Burial took place in the adjoining cemetery.
