Northern members of the ICA enjoy a visit to Donore cottage

-

A group of Northern ICA members were guests of Cllr Frank Godfrey as they visited the historic Boyne Valley Cottage recently, with guide John McCullen, who enthralled them with historical info.

The women were happy to look around the 400-year-old thatched cottage, and took photos leaning across the picturesque half door. They examined the many farm and rural implements on view, such as the milk can, the old Ferguson tractor, a turf cart, and other paraphernalia.

‘ They really enjoyed their visit here, and were taken aback that the cottage was here way back in the time of The Battle of the Boyne in 1690,’ said Cllr Godfrey. ‘Our cottage has been very popular and has welcomed John Hume, Johnny Logan, John Taylor MP, sportspeople, musicians and singers, and many foreign and local visitors.’

Historian John McCullen outlined Donore’s past, including the famous battle between King James II and King William in 1690, the Cistercian monastery at Mellifont which controlled all the lands in the area, and some famous people buried in Donore graveyard. Before leaving, the women gave a rousing rendition of ‘A Countrywoman’s Song’ which was much enjoyed.

The cottage is growing in popularity as it hosts regular music and traditional Irish sessions. The cottage is open from May – September.
