Pride as John Matthews is new solicitor
May 1968
MALACHY Matthews must have been a proud and gratified man last week, knowing that a second son of his was following in his footsteps, and taking his place at the local Court.
His newly qualified .solicitor son, John, was on Friday, welcomed to the Court where he took his place beside his elder brother, Neil.
Welcoming him to the Court, Mr. Eugene Gillan, senior member of the Bar present, said that this young man was a member of one of the coast’s foremost legal families. He had qualified with flying colours and was following a fine tradition set by his family.
Associating himself with the tributes, Superintendent Michael F. Bohan said that he knew Mr. Malachy Matthews and his .son, Mr. Neil Matthews for some years now.
Court Clerk, Mr. Tom Coffoy also associated himself with the remarks, while Justice William Tormey, who, minutes earlier had himself been welcomed to the Court, remarked that if John Matthews was half as good as his father, then he would be a very fine solicitor indeed.
Mr. Matthews, replying, individually thanked the four speakers for their felicitations.
