Gerry Martin led West End United land another title in Leinster
May 1993
WEST End United had to win their final league match away to Pearse in Dun Laoighre on Saturday last to achieve yet another title in Leinster League football, aided by their player/ manager supreme Gerry ‘Gel’ Martin (right).
West End, already Liam Dodd Cup holders and double winners last year, started tightly and controlled thegamenicely and 15 minutes before the break David Cassidy’s solo effort took away the pre match nerves.
The player/ manager himself Gerry Martin made it seven goals in as many games, his best ever tally just to show he’s maturing well, after 10 minutes of the second period and from then on it was one way traffic with David Cassidy and Ian McKenna wrapping it up. Outstanding were David Cassidy ana Martin Cassidy.
The foundations for the win were laid on Thursday night when United played hosts to Balscadden, the team they beat in the Liam Dodd cup final two weeks ago.
West End led 2-0 with goals from David Cassidy and Mark Monaghan before the Blues came back to level. But in the final two minutes Gerry Martin once more popped up to snatch the winner.
‘We knew that we needed to win in Pearse Rovers and Tarn delighted with the way the lads played. Martin Cassidy was a revelation again and he’s probably been the key to our title charge in recent weeks since his move from Duleek,’ the boss stated.
‘Our back four has been exceptional as well and in David O’Rourke we have the best keeper in the league.’
