-

Louth County Council’s Road Safety Officer together with Louth Sports Partnership and Louth Libraries have invited all Second to Fifth class students to participate in their Primary School Road Safety Art Competition to coincide with National Bike Week 2018- celebrating and promoting all that’s great about bikes and cycling. As well as great prizes for all the categories, the overall winner will receive a brand new bike.

Speaking about the importance of safe cycling Adrian O’Sullivan, Road Safety Officer with Louth County Council said “As the summer holidays are fast approaching it’s a great time to get out on our bikes but everyone should be aware just how important cycle safety is. We are looking for boys and girls in second to fifth class to design a poster with the theme of ‘Cycling Safely in County Louth’ based on the Road Safety Authority’s Rules for safe cycling. Research has shown that positive awareness raising of cycle safety with our children can help reduce the amount of minor, serious and fatal injuries that occur”.

The County Louth Road Safety Officer has some suggestions for those thinking of submitting an entry to the competition “The poster could perhaps include details of the new Road Safety Authority’s current TV campaign aimed at educating motorists on the recommended passing distances when overtaking cyclists, namely 1 metre in zones of up to 50km/h and 1.5 metres in zones over 50km/h. There may even be a famous County Louth landmark or catchy slogan included too!” added Adrian.

The winning entry in each category will receive a hamper full of ‘Safe Cycling’ goodies including a ‘One 4 All’ gift voucher, bicycle light, Sam Browne belt and much more to keep everyone safe when they are out on their bikes this summer. The overall winner will receive a brand new bike and helmet!

There are four categories in the competition: 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th Class and all entries must be submitted through their schools.

Speaking on behalf of Louth Libraries Amanda Branigan Senior Executive Librarian said “Louth Libraries are delighted to collaborate with Louth County Council and Louth Sports Partnership in promoting National Bike Week. We hope all 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th classes will enter the competition and schools can drop their entries into their local library. We also encourage everyone to join their local library, it’s free!”

National Bike Week which takes place this year from 9th to 17th June is coordinated locally by Louth Sports Partnership.

Graham Russell of Louth Local Sports Partnership explained the benefits of cycling as an everyday pursuit and as a healthy way to travel with many physical benefits. “Bike Week not only promotes the leisure and fun aspects of cycling as a family, with friends, to sightsee, it also highlights why it is important to choose cycling as a means to commute to work, to school or to run errands”’ said Graham. “The ‘Safe Cycling in Co Louth’ poster competition is just one of the many events that Louth Sports partnership will be involved with throughout the county as part of Bike Week in June” added Graham.
