Valuable win for Glyde

-

GLYDE RANGERS ST JOSEPHS 1-8 0-8

GLYDE Rangers came through this bottom of the table clash with St Josephs to collect two very valuable points.

The first quarter was dominated by both defences with Glyde opening the scoring in the first minute with a superb strike from Niall Sharkey. The Joes failed to deal with the crossfield breeze as a number of efforts drifted off target while Trevor O’Brien landed a 30m free for Glyde on 15 minutes.

The deciding score of the game came when Trevor O’Brien responded quickest to a short kick out and he made no mistake to find the back of the Joes net on 20 minutes. The Joes finally got on the scoresheet with a long-range effort from Conall Smyth, but registered nine wides in that first half.

Glyde Rangers were much the sharper side, finishing the half with half back Mark O’Brien pointing on 26 minutes and Brian Duffy converting a 45 to give Glyde Rangers a 1-4 to 0-1 half time lead.

The Joes upped their game in the second half and struck an early point through Oisin McGuinness. After the teams exchanged scores, a point from Alan McKenna cut the gap to 1-7 to 0-6 on 45 minutes.

Trevor O’Brien kicked his team’s last point on 51 minutes although Alan McKenna kept the pressure on with two points. It took a fine save from goalkeeper David Brennan to deny McKenna an equalising goal.
