Back-up keeper comes to Curraha’s rescue

-

A COUPLE of great saves from netminder Luke McCarthy helped keep Curraha in the hunt for promotion at Trim on Sunday evening.

McCarthy, deputising for Liam Hogan, twice prevented goals in the second half as Trim pressed hard to get back into contention after finishing six points in arrears at the break. McCarthy first denied Aaron Lynch and shortly afterwards thwarted Neil Heffernan.

Curraha laid the foundations for victory in the opening period and they made a great start to proceedings with points from Andrew Battersby, David Coyle, Jack O’Connor and Sean Keogh before Trim got off the mark courtesy of an Aaron Lynch point.

Further points from Brian Murphy, David Toner and Sean O’Hanrahan left Curraha leading

0-7 to 0-1 and they eventually finishing the half 1-10 to 0-7 to the good. The goal came from young Jack O’Connor, who also added his second point before half-time.

Trim were much more menacing throughout the second half as they enjoyed a greater share of possession. Curraha found scores much more difficult to come by, but O’Connor and David Coyle kept the scoreboard ticking over.

The hosts reduced the deficit to four points at one stage before David Toner hit an important point for the visitors.

The game was in the closing stages when Sean Keogh put the issue beyond doubt with his side’s second goal.

Trim hit a consolation goal in added time from Aaron Lynch, who finished top scorer with a fine haul of 1-8.
