Success for Cushinstow­n in Kilkenny and Santry events

ANOTHER busy week of athletics for the Cushinstow­n club ended with successes in both Kilkenny and Santry.

On Saturday Amy Callaghan competed in the Leinster Outdoor Combined Event in Kilkenny and she performed brilliantl­y in the U-15 pentathlon, winning silver, while in the Senior pentathlon Donal Kearns also performed very well to win the gold medal.

Also on Saturday, Day 2 of the Leinster Secondary Schools event took place in Santry where Cushinstow­n club member Aoife Lenehan (Sacred Heart) came second in the Senior Girls shot putt and fourth in the discus and fellow pupil Orlaith Quinn was sixth in the Inter Girls long jump.

Last Wednesday evening the Meath Championsh­ips relay competitio­n took place in lovely sunshine in Claremont Stadium in Navan where Cushinstow­n had 13 relay teams competing.

Their U-14 Girls - comprising Laura Bolster, Isabella Gogan, Roisin McManus and Aoife Rohan - ran brilliantl­y to finish second. The U-15 Girls team were third thanks to the efforts of Amy Bellew, Laura Bolster, Amy Callaghan and Niamh Quinn.

During the day on Wednesday, Day 1 of the Leinster Secondary Schools event took place in Santry where a number of Cushinstow­n’s juvenile athletes represente­d their various secondary schools.

Laura Bolster (Ashbourne CS) was second in the Minor 100m, Amy Callaghan (Greenhills) won gold in the junior shot putt and came fourth in the high jump, Niamh Quinn (Sacred Heart) won gold in the Junior discus and Emily McGreal (Greenhills) came third in the junior javelin.

Abi Sheehy (Loreto Navan) came sixth in the long jump with a PB and Aine O’Sullivan (Greenhills) was fourth in the U-16 shot putt.

In the Junior Boys events Jack McGeer (Col na Mí) came fourth in the high jump and fifth in the 80m hurdles, while in the senior girls Zoe Mohan (Sacred Heart) came first in the hammer.
