Hard-grafting Brady digs out deserved silver for St Peter’s

-

FOLLOWING the successful Louth Championships that St Peter’s AC enjoyed the previous week, there was a step up in class to provincial events last weekend, with Combined Events taking place in Kilkenny and the 4x100m Relays in Enniscorthy.

Niamh Brady had a fantastic day on Saturday when she won a silver medal in the Girls Under-14 competition. This was a very deserved medal as Niamh has really knuckled down in training this year at all her events.

In total she amassed 2,103 points which was made up of a time of 13.22 in the 75m hurdles which earned her 547 points, a below-par long jump of 4.02m which got her 310 points, a 1.30m high jump which her 409 points. She followed this with a shot putt performance of 7.28m which was worth 353 points, and going into the last event - the 800m - she was in third position.

However, a brave last 400m ensured her place on the podium and indeed moved her up to the silver middle position, with a time of 2min 42sec earning her 484 points.

The following day Niamh traveled with three of her clubmates to Enniscorthy to compete in relays and the girls had a really good performance in the heat, finishing second in a time of 56.48 and following up with a solid performance in the final with a time of 55.52.

Although the girls found themselves outside of the medals in the final, they can take great satisfaction in running such a good time - in fact the best any St Peter’s team has done in a number of years.

The hectic track and field season continues next weekend for Niamh Brady as, having qualified on Saturday from the Leinster Combined Events, the National competition takes place at Morton Stadium in Santry.
