CAMINO WALK

As part of the on-going fund-raising for church roof repairs at St. Mary`s Church in James` Street Drogheda, Community Historian and Archivist at the Drogheda Museum, Brendan Matthews will present a Camino de St. Mary`s `Walk n Talk` this Wednesday, May 23rd beginning outside the church in James`s Street Drogheda at 7.30pm. The historic walk will then move towards the beautiful Dale Valley area of St. Mary`s parish where there is some wonderful sights of both the natural & built heritage in the area.

The tour will then move up the Dale to the site of the old St. Patrick`s Well and where people had settled for millennia. The `Walk n Talk` will then view the wonder sights of the Dale from the top of St. Patrick`s Steps and the location of where Oliver Cromwell laid siege to Drogheda in 1649. The tour will then enter the grounds of the former St. Mary`s Church at the top of Mary Street where Brendan will outline the remains of a section of the old St. Mary`s medieval Church and the extraordinary tale of how the discovery of the remains of a Catholic Bishop`s tomb caused a military stand-off in the mid. 19th century. Finally the tour will end at the Old Hill/Pitcher Hill & Scarlet Lane area overlooking St. Mary`s Church in James`s Street from where the evening had first begun. The tour should last between 70 and 90 minutes depending on the amount present and the weather etc. All are very welcome to attend. Please note, that the tour will move off from James`s Street at 7.30pm sharp.

DEVIL`S BREAD

The tall, green wild floral stems with a white flower on top, commonly called `Devil`s Bread`, can be seen growing and flowering in abundance along the smaller country roads at the moment and great care should be taken by all vehicle drivers, pedestrians and cyclist alike while travelling along such smaller roads as your vision is particularly hampered due to the growth of the plane.

The correct name of this wild flower is Hemlock; it is a poisonous plant and shouldn’t be touched and/or eaten by children or adults and hands should be washed if you have been amongst it. Growing as it does along the verges of the smaller rural roads, it makes viewing harder to see on-coming traffic, cyclists and pedestrians, while the roads also appear to be much narrower as a result.

On the other hand; the green stems with the white flower set against the backdrop of the hedgerows and the newly ploughed fields is one of the natural beauties of the rural landscape at this time of the year; a stunning beauty amidst the young wildlife, birdlife, flora and fauna that can been seen in abundance across the parish at the minute. So, shred the `earphones` and take in the natural sights, sounds and scent of our wonderful surroundings!
