LATE OLIVER HARDING

The death took place last Tuesday of Oliver Harding, a man not only synonymous with Slane GFC but also Meath GAA over many years. Oliver held a number of different positions in his beloved Slane club during a lifetime of service, including chairman, secretary and county board delegate.

At the time of his death Oliver was club president. A former chairman of the Meath juvenile board he also served as a selector on Meath underage teams for many years during which provincial and All-Ireland honours were won.

Considered a great judge of football Oliver would travel the length and breath of the county seeking out young talent for county teams. He also donned the Slane colours for many years and was a member of the team that captured the Meath junior title in 1952.

Members of the club formed a guard of honour at his removal to St Patrick’s Church, Slane, on Thursday evening. Hisfuneral Mass took place at noon on Friday with burial afterwards to St Erc’s Cemetery. Oliver who was predecease­d by his wife Vera will be greatly missed by his sons Jim and Davy, daughters Patricia, Angela and Pauline, sons-in-law Hugh and Noel, daughters-inlaw Tish and Tracy, grandsons, granddaugh­ters, great-grandsons, great-granddaugh­ters, brothers and sisters, uncle Gerry, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends to whom sympathy is extended.

CYCLE

Slane Spinners big 10th anniversar­y SOSAD Cycle proved a tremendous success with close on 300 cyclists taking part. The cycle over 50km and 105km started and finished at Stackallen Pitch & Putt club. The club would like to thank everyone who participat­ed as well as the 60 volunteers, the Order of Malta and the local Red Cross who helped out on the day. The presentati­on of a cheque to SOSAD will take place at a later date.

SOCIETY TOUR

Slane History Society have a tour to historic Beaulieu House and Gardens this Saturday, May 26th. The tour will start at 10.30am sharp.

BLESSING OF THE GRAVES

This Sunday, May 27th, is an important day in the parish with the annual Blessing of the Graves taking place. The ceremony on the Hill of Slane is at 3pm followed by St Erc’s Cemetery at approximat­ely 3.30pm.

SLANE CASTLE 5K

This years Slane Castle 5k trail run/walk in aid of St Patrick’s national school takes place on Sunday, June 10th, starting at 10am.

LADYRATH SUMMER CAMPS

Ladyrath Lane Summer Camps are taking place again this year in July and are suitable for 4 - 12 year olds. The three day camps are from Tuesday July 10th to Thursday 12th; Tuesday July 17th - Thursday 19th; Tuesday July 24th - to Thursday 26th, from 10am to 3pm each day.

Children will enjoy a fun-filled week in a very safe and outdoor environmen­t, including nature walks through the fields, gardening, woodwork, art & craft, games room, animal studies, mindfulnes­s, fitness and lots more. Limited to 30 places. Fully trained staff and fully insured.

HILL OF SLANE TOURS

Hill of Slane Tours have recommence­d for the season with tours every Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday’s, starting at 2pm, from the car park on the Hill. Tours at other times are available by arrangemen­t and groups can also be catered for. Please email hillofslan­etours@ yahoo.com

OFF BY HEART

The Francis Ledwidge Museum committee are holding the ‘Off By Heart’ poetry recital again this year, and it takes place on Sunday, June 17th, in the Conyngham Arms Hotel. A broader area will be covered this year with six schools taking part. Ledwidge Day will take place on Sunday, July 29th, in the Conyngham Arms Hotel and the theme will be World War 1.

WALKING GROUP

Broomfield & District Residents Walking Group have resumed their Tuesday evening walks from 7 - 8pm. These are flat road and off road walks by rivers, lakes and woodland and are suitable to all walking abilities. Male and female walkers of all ages welcome. DIOCESAN PILGRIMAGE TO LOURDES

Duleek Fair Weekend takes place from Friday June 29th to Sunday July 1st, with fun, entertainm­ent and activities for people of all ages. ART EXHIBITION
