Orange Order take to the roads by Boyneside for annual march

- By HUBERT MURPHY

THE Orange Order say they are keen to continue to build relations in the Drogheda area.

Speaking at the annual march at Oldbridge on Saturday, Grand Master Billy Smartt said their event was not sectarian and was simply part of a shared history.

He said he felt fortunate and honoured to be at Oldbridge.

The 1690 Boyne Lodge will mark the 10th anniversary of their formation next year with a large event by the banks of the Boyne.

Jim Martin will take over the role of Grand Master for the next two years.

‘I’m really looking forward to it and I’ve been at all the marches since they started’, he added.

Saturday’s event saw up to 40 Orange men take part in the march that went from the Oldbridge side and across the Obelisk bridge before turning onto the Slane Road and into the Crossing Field.

Gardai were out in force to make sure the event went off without incident.
