Say hello to new-look Tooting Meadows!
DROGHEDA’S latest housing development is to be called after an historic section of the former Town Walls.
The complex being erected on the site of the former fire station on Scarlet Street will be called Tooting Meadows.
It is named after Tooting Tower that former part of the nearby walls and stood at the junction of King Street, Magdalene Street and Scarlet Street and was regarded as a formidable structure.
It also had a second name - Shooting Tower.
The town walls had a number of towers as well as gates - such as Pigeon Tower, close to William Street as well as Bolton and St Catherine’s Tower or gate.
North & East Housing Association are in the process of constructing 15 new homes on the fire station site and the adjoining car park.
‘ The new homes will revitalise this site while incorporating the character of the existing historic neighbourhood and will cater for the housing needs of families and the older persons,’ a council statement on the major project remarked.
Construction will involve a 15 month building programme.
Over 50 free car parking spaces disappeared with the closure of the parking facility at the old fire station.
