Repeal welcomed but action needed for women in crisis

- By ALISON COMYN

FOLLOWING the landslide victory to Repeal the Eighth Amendment, which saw a 68.12% ‘Yes’ result in Drogheda, Convenor of ‘Drogheda Together for Yes’ Stephanie Lord says there is now an onus on the government to introduce legislation straightaway.

In welcoming the overwhelming yes vote in Louth, Stephanie Lord said the repeal was needed to ensure pregnant women the care and compassion they need in Ireland.

“We are extremely grateful to the people of Drogheda who stood with us in this campaign, and voted yes, and it shows it is a town that cares about people in crisis pregnancy situations,’ she told the Drogheda Independent.

A total of 19,919 valid votes were returned in Drogheda, with the YES vote receiving 13,568 or 68.12% of the vote, and NO 6,351, or 31.88%, of the overall result.

However, Stephanie added that the Government needs to act on the result straight away.

“Until new legislation is enacted to give effect to the change needed, nine women a day will continue to travel to Britain to access abortion services and at least three will take the abortion pill in their homes,” she said. “We are now calling for the Government to introduce and pass the legislation necessary to allow women to have lawful abortions in Ireland, in the care of their GPs and their own families.”
