Volunteers begin clean up of the ancient town walls of Drogheda

- By HUBERT MURPHY

THE Defenders of Drogheda’s History are taking on the task of cleaning the ancient Town Walls, claiming that it’s something the authorities should be doing, but have neglected, down the years.

A team tackled a section of wall at the Bridge of Peace last Saturday, Cllr Frank Godfrey expressing satisfaction with the outcome.

‘It was a sensitive job and there was no damage to the stonework. We took away bushes at the wall so they can be seen properly’, he stated.

‘ This is an historic town and little is being done to promote that. People are angry about the lack of interest in our heritage.

‘ The time for talk is over. It’s time for action. Lack of funding has caused these problems and we must make our heritage a priority.’

He says parts of the town wall is in a dangerous state and the issues are being ignored.

‘ The big problem with Drogheda is the lack of leadership. We need to get a Town Clerk system back again’, he urged.
