Dunleer athletes on song

-

THE track and field season has truly begun with a bang for Dunleer AC, with personal bests, qualifications and medals coming thick and fast.

On the European circuit Garry Campbell and Jack Boylan have been getting quicker with each outing and in Belgium on Saturday Campbell had a great PB over 1500m with 3:48.93, with Boylan improving his PB to 3:54.76.

In the Leinster Schools Championships Karlis Kaugars (Ballymakenny College) showed his class once again with gold in the Minor Boys javelin (37.10m) and silver in the shot putt (13.08m). This gives Karlis a qualification for the prestigious All-Ireland Schools Championship in Tullamore this coming Saturday.

Victor Eseosa (St Joseph’s CBS) was a worthy medallist also, with bronze in the Junior Boys 800m (2:07), qualifying him for the All-Ireland Schools as well.

The club’s final qualifier is 16-year-old Conor Matthews (Scoil Uí Mhuirí Dunleer) who was the Inter Boys 800m winner in a new PB of 2:01.

Matthews has also been selected to represent Leinster in the Tailteann Games in June.

Elsewhere, Darragh Greene proved himself a legend by winning the Legend of Louth 5k title in 15:50.

Greene has had a lot of success in the county this month, winning the Drogheda 10k, the Cooley Coast Run in a new course record of 31:28 and the aforementioned Legends of Louth and is an inspiration to the younger athletes in Dunleer AC who see his hard work in training paying dividends.
