Mary Flynn is Ms Funanza

BEAMORE Road, Drogheda, beauty Mary Flynn became Miss Funanza 1987 when she defeated 11 of Drogheda’s most beautiful ladies in the grand final held in the Weavers on Saturday night last.

Mary, who is twin sister of Meath Gaelic football star, Bernard, was chosen after more than four hours of deliberati­on by the panel of three judges.

Each contestant was interviewe­d separately throughout the day by judges, Maeve Wickham, the popular owner of Star Travel in Stockwell Street, the charming Mary Cooke from Arcata, California and Drogheda Independen­t reporter, Hubert Murphy.

The ladies certainly did themselves proud starting with Ballsgrove artist, Helen Carroll. Siobhan Ronan from Baltray was described as “romantic and with a sense of humour.”

Secretary at Co. Louth Golf Club was pretty Helen O’Shea while both Sandra Finnegan and Caroline Fleming are travel agency employees, the former with Ray Tracey in Dublin and Caroline at home in San Francisco where she now resides.

Madeline Fanning, Margaret O’Kane, Susan Smith, Alison Holt, Noeleen O’Neill, Joyce Matthews were also finalists.

MC on the night was Ken Murray and Ireland star Mark Lawrenson made the presentati­on.
