Opportunity for slice of €2bn urban funds

BUSINESSES AND LOCAL AUTHORITIES URGED TO APPLY TO SECURE FUTURE

- By ALISON COMYN

DROGHEDA could benefit from some of the €2bn earmarked for urban regeneration as part of the announcement of a €4 Billion national funding spread across four areas.

However, allocation of funding will be down to individual local authorities submitting attractive and viable projects as part of an application system.

The town is named as one of five key regional/cross border drivers, alongside Dundalk, Athlone, Letterkenny and Sligo.

Rather than allocating funding in a ‘ business as usual’ way to government departments, these funds will allocate money competitively to the best projects. The funds will be open to applications from state agencies, local government, business, educational institutions, chambers of commerce.

The call for applications will open in the coming weeks.

Local Fine Gael TD, Fergus O’Dowd says Louth and Meath Local Authorities must step up to the plate and deliver for the community

“The €2 billion Urban Regeneration Fund has the ability to transform Drogheda’s future development by funding a wide range of regeneration and development projects, including the acquisition, enabling and/ or development of areas, sites and buildings, relocation of uses, public amenity works, community facilities, transport, services infrastructure and/or transition to a low carbon and climate resilient society,” said Deputy O’Dowd.

“Following on from Drogheda’s inclusion as a key development centre for jobs and growth in the 2040 plan, Drogheda is now the leading town for regional and cross border driven investment. The town will become a more attractive place to live and work in. This will be the first major urban regeneration programme for the last 20 years.”

He will be meet with the CEO’s of both Louth and Meath Local Authorities and separately Government Ministers to progress plans and would also encourage local businesses, the chamber of commerce and local community groups to make their own applications.
