Gardai wanted parking ban
Parking on West Street is a big issue - even more so with the suspension of pay parking - but nothing has changed it seems.
Exactly 50 years ago, May 1968, the local gardai were calling for a ban on parking on the main street from Patrickswell Lane to the post office.
Chief Supt Lyons was behind the suggestion.
He said the town was in ‘chaos’ and was seeking a Temporary Order from his superiors to introduce it. He would gladly talk to the Town Clerk and Mayor about it.
Cllr D Fairclough actually said that the street should become one-way to facililtate easier access.
50 years on - there is still parking but the one-way system has come in. Mr Fairclough was a clever chap.
