DROGHEDA UNITED LONGFORD TOWN 4 0

TWO second-half goals from Jordan Adeyemo put the seal on a comprehensive victory for Drogheda United in this Under-19 Northern Division clash last Wednesday evening.

The game was played on the Home Farm pitch at Whitehall to mark Drogheda United’s underage partnership with the north Dublin club and it kicked off in bright sunshine on a perfect pitch.

Following their purposeful display against Dundalk in Oriel Park the previous Saturday and the appearance of six of the team in the Leinster Senior Cup game 24 hours earlier, there were some changes to the starting line-up as schoolboy international James Carroll came into the defence and Oisin Proudfoot and Luke Neville took up two of the midfield positions.

The Drogs were quick to assert themselves in that sector and Eoin Broughan had two good efforts on goal in the early stages.

Then, on seven minutes, the Drogs forced a corner and Josh Scully’s great delivery was met by Dylan Connolly’s bullet header which sailed into the net for the lead goal.

Neville and Proudfoot fought hard with Broughan to gain control in the middle of the field and set up many chances going forward. The Boynesiders were also solid at the back, where Leo Tang moved the ball intelligently out of defence.

On 36 minutes a good Broughan pass found Adeyemo on the right and his great cross was blasted to the net by Scully for 2-0, and almost straight from the restart the Drogs nearly added to their lead when Tom Adeyinka headed wide from a good Tang cross.

When the second half started the Drogs kept up their level of intensity across the field and with the introduction of William Hondermarck they put even more pressure on the Longford defence.

Heading into the final quarter great ball control from the France native saw him beat four defenders, and just as he seemed to lose control of the ball close to the goal Adeyemo popped up right on cue to slide the ball into the Longford net.

Drogheda’s final goal came on 82 minutes when a brilliant Scully run down the left left the Longford defence for dead and his precise cross was finished to the net in style by Adeyemo.

The Under-19s now take a well-deserved break for a couple of weeks and can look forward to the second half of the season with confidence following recent results.
