NEWFOUNDWELL FC’s outstanding season moved into top gear in January, with their rock-solid central defender Stephen Murphy right at the heart of their remarkable successes.
In the space of seven days they won two penalty shootouts in Cork and Kilkenny to reach the last 16 in both the FAI and Leinster Junior Cups, with Murphy scoring the decisive spot kick against Knocknaheeny.
That was the furthest a Drogheda team had ever gone in the FAI competition and they went on to reach the quarter-finals in Leinster before securing their first-ever North East League Premier Division title in emphatic style. Then, just last Friday, the ‘Well completed their season in fine style with victory in the Kilmessan Shield Final, meaning they lost only twice in some 40 games in the campaign.
