Pay parking making a return
THE draft pay-parking and car parking Bye Laws 2018 for Drogheda, to replace the existing laws controversially rescinded in March, were brought before the June meeting of borough council members on Monday night.
Scores of submissions from the public, as well as council representatives, were mentioned in a lengthy council document, however, the vast majority of concerns are unable to be addressed under the scope of the new Bye-Laws.
Issues such as residents parking on Windmill Road, road marking, electronic signage, additional town centre parking and reducing the parking fee to €1 in line with Dundalk, are all deemed important to parking management, but have no implications for the provisions of the draft Bye-Laws.
However, any individual submissions could be discussed by members at a later stage, following adoption of the new Bye-Laws.
Louth County Council was forced to suspend all parking charges in Drogheda in March, after a challenge to their validity from a member of the public.
The loss of income to the council in that period was estimated to be €300,000.
Pay parking charges for onstreet and car parks will be re-instated once the new ByeLaws have been passed and adopted by members.
The draft Bye-Laws have been on public display since April 9th and other submissions noted about on street parking were:
Restricting parking near Our Lady of Lourdes hospital to a maximum of one hour
An audit to maximise parking spaces in Drogheda
Reviewing taxi usage on Shop Street/William Street.
Introduction of parking zones – with an incremental system of reduced parking away from the town centre
Free parking after 4pm Loading bays to be restricted to pre-11am
However, none of these submissions were said to have implications to the new draft Pay Parking and Car Park Bye-Laws.
