‘Faceless woman’ on Stamullen road

-

AN amazing story from the 1970s I came across and wonder - has the faceless woman of Stamullen ever been seen again. Brendan Matthews where are you?

A shopping errand to the local store ended with a frightening experience for a 14-year-old Thomas Heffernan of Balloy, Stamullen, a second-year student at Drogheda Technical School, who was cycling home alone when he was confronted, he claimed, by the figure of a “faceless woman.” at Cock Hill.

He described the apparition, which occurred at approximately 9.30pm, resembled the profile of a woman.

“’It appeared at first,” he said, “from the right and stood in the middle of the road. as if trying to stop me. it remained there for about a minute then vanished when I put one foot on the ground to side-step it. A couple of yards further on it appeared again, this time from the left, crossed slowly in front of me before vanishing into a small stream,’ he said.

That he was shocked by the apparition was confirmed by his mother, Mrs. Michael Heffernan, a mother of eight. She said : ‘” When Thomas arrived home he was visibly shaken and appeared to be suffering from shock. He is certainly not the nervous type and I seriously believe he did see something.”
