Cushinstown make impact
THE Cushinstown AC contingent braved sweltering conditions to make a big impact in Saturday’s Leinster Pairs and U-12/U-13 Championships in Tullamore.
Annalise Harris and Kacey McManus did brilliantly in winning the gold medals in the U-9 turbo javelin pairs event and they also did very well in the U-9 long jump pairs event, coming fifth overall.
In the Boys U-10 pairs event Harry Gough and Kyle Hetherton threw brilliantly, claiming the bronze medals, and the same duo also did very well in the U-11 long jump pairs.
Following these results, Annalise, Kacey, Harry and Kyle are now through to the All-Ireland Championships in July for the turbo javelin.
In the individual events Kevin Doyle threw well in the U-12 shot putt but unfortunately had to pull out of the high jump event due to injury.
In the U-12 Girls shot putt Nia Hetherton also threw well and she did brilliantly in the high jump, coming fifth overall.
In the Boys U-13 high jump James Bellew and Lee Callaghan were in great form, finishing fourth and fifth respectively, while Aoife Rohan also did very well in the equivalent event for girls.
On Sunday there was more action at the Community Games in Cushinstown for the county finals, with some Cushinstown athletes performing very well andh several of them qualifying for the All-Irelands later in the summer.
Further afield, Arona in Tenerife was the unlikely venue for a new Irish record as Cushinstown AC’s Elizabeth Morland broke her own previous heptathlon mark with a total of 5,815 points.
It proved to be a weekend to remember for the club as Donal Kearns and Michael O’Connor both won medals at the Under-23, Senior and Masters Leinster Championships in Tullamore.
Kearns won the Senior Men’s 110m hurdles and came second in the high jump (1.70m), while O’Sullivan took first place in the Senior Men’s discus (34.21m) and finished second in the shot putt.
