July 1997

DESPITE only taking up marathon running relatively late, Drogheda’s Fergus Godfrey has already 22 races under his belt and is now aiming to pass the 30 mark by the year 2000.

Fergus, a brother of outgoing Drogheda Mayor Malachy, has competed in four Boston Marathons, nine in Belfast, seven in Dublin, one in Cork and one in Dublin and revealed that, ‘I would like to do 30 marathons within the next four years. I hope to do New York, London. Berlin, Australia and then back to Boston for the year 2000 as I love Boston.”

While he concedes that it will be very expensive to complete this ambition, but his love of running is such that he is determined to carry it out.

His desire is not simply confined to the major events as he loves taking part an any event, and to date can claim to have taken part in over 300 long distance races. Fergus enthused, ‘1 love running and I will run as long as I can. I did 45 races one year, four 10k in one week and two races on the one day.’

Fergus, who has run a number of his marathons for charity, travels all over the country for races and has clocked up some impressive times in the process. His best time for the marathon is 3hrs 22 mins, while he has also recorded 39 minutes for 10k, 31 minutes for 5 miles, 91 minutes for half marathon and lhr 45mins for 15 miles.
