Sylvester ran a sweet business

WE much regret to announce the death of Mr. Sylvester Roche, Peter Street, Drogheda. which occurred last week after a few weeks’ Illness.

Deceased, who had reached an advanced age, belonged to a noted old Wexford family, but had spent almost his entire life in Drogheda, where he was prominentl­y associated with the local building trade and also owned, until recent years, a sweet-making industry and retail sweet shop in Peter Street.

The latter business had been a favourite attraction for more than one generation of Drogheda children. In his younger days in Drogheda he was a fine athlete, probably best known in the handball alley.

The late Mr. Roche, who was highly esteemed because of his quiet and sincere dispositio­n, was a devout Catholic and a founder of the Drogheda Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. His death is deeply regretted In the town and widespread sympathy has been extended to his bereaved widow, family and other relatives.

The funeral took place on Friday to St. Peter’s cemetery after Solemn Requiem Mass.

Chief mourners were — Messrs. Sylvester. Patrick, Joseph and Vincent Roche (sons) : Mrs. Mary Corrlgan and Miss P. Roche (daughters), and Mr. John Kealy (brother-ln law).
