Special Olympics torch run hits town

DROGHEDA Special Olympics Club welcomed the Special Olympics Ireland Law Enforcemen­t Torch Run (LETR) Flame of Hope to the town last week.

The torch, a symbol of hope and inclusion was touring Leinster and the rest of the country before the Ireland Games Opening Ceremony in Tallaght Stadium last Thursday.

The LETR is an important awareness raising and fundraisin­g programme for Special Olympics Ireland organised by the Police Service of Northern Ireland and An Garda Síochána.

The Torch Run arrived in to Drogheda Special Olympics club to cheers from everyone gathered for the spectacle. Speaking about the event, local fundraiser co-ordinator Eoin Treanor said “The Torch Run is a very exciting event for us and the excitement in Drogheda was palpable. We are delighted to work with An Garda Síochána and members of the LETR who support us throughout the year at various events including Polar Plunge and Cops n Donuts.’

Cllr Pio Smith, Superinten­dent Andrew Watters and Garda John Fahy were on hand to welcome the Torch to the clubhouse.
