A walk around the town centre left local couple horrified with full bins and dirty pavement

-

Dear Sir,

With the thought of the upcoming Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann and the influx of visitors it will bring to our town, my husband and I took a purposeful walk around the town center, on a recent Friday evening. We were horrified to see the amount of litter on West Street, overflowing litter bins, pavements stained and discolored, many buildings neglected, some empty and derelict. We can only agree with the newly elected mayor of Drogheda, Frank Godfrey, that the town needs a face lift, that parts of the center are in a terrible state with derelict buildings and a serious litter problem.

How have we come to this point? There has been much effort over the years put in to improving our town by many people, including the the hard working Council workers, the business owners themselves, residents groups, the Tidy Towns Committee, the Town Council, the schools etc.

It is generally agreed that the refurbishment of West Street was not the success we had hoped for but we are where we are. Improvements first of all should be for the people who live in the town and secondly for our visitors. Nothwithstanding the fact that retail parks have drawn much of the custom out of the center of the town and the chronic problem with parking, surely it is not beyond the bounds of possibility, with a little imagination, some hard work and cooperation, to return the center of our town to its former glory?
