Ardee CU born
January 1963
IT was his hope that the people of Ardee would fully co-operate with those elected to run the Credit Union, as in so doing they would not only be benefitting themselves and the town, but the whole countryside, stated the Parish Priest of Ardee, Very Rev. P. Canon McDonnell, V.F., at a highly successful launching on Monday night in the Parochial Hall.
The meeting was an historic one in so far as it saw the birth of the Credit Union in Louth.
In addition to Canon McDonnell and Fr . Gallagher, on the platform were: Rev. Fr. W. Murtagh, C.C, Ardee (President, Board of Directors), who proved a most worthy Chairman; Miss N. Herlihy, General Secretary, Credit Union League of Ireland; Messrs. G. Rynne, P. B. Flanagan and T. M. Gogarty, Kells; Coir. James Malone, Messrs. J. J. Thorne, Chairman, Ardee Commissioners; P. Campbell . Chairman, Industrial section Ardee Development Association; and last, but by no means least, Mr. William Wheately, who has undertaken the onerous duties as Secretary/Treasurer of the new Branch.
An office, for the purpose of transacting business, has been acquired in a central position in Market Street (convenient to Mr. Tom Walsh’s premises) and it was announced on Monday night that Mr. Wheately would be in attendance there on Friday and Saturday nights of each week (7 to 9 o’clock).
At the outset on Monday night, Rev. Fr. Murtagh welcomed all, especially the visitors from other centres who came to address the meeting.
