1,500 PUPILS IN FINE VOICE!
YOUNG pupils from Drogheda got a taste of the Fleadh when they gathered in the O’Raghallaigh’s for a special concert last week.
Almost 1,500 students from 25 schools across Drogheda and out as far as Laytown and Julianstown came together to participate in ‘Cas Amhrán’ as part of the youth programme for Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann.
The ‘Cas Amhrán’ initiative involved primary school students learning six chosen songs as Gaeilge over the past few months which they performed on the day. Aston Village ETNS treated the participants to some tunes from their school Trad Group, while 12 pupils from Scoil Aonghusa, led by Máire Ní Cholim, sang Rince Philib a’ Cheoil’. The event, hosted by Sean O’Laoire, from Co. Meath was aimed at increasing children’s awareness of Irish culture and tradition and encouraging them to immerse themselves in this year’s Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann.
Orla Brannigan, Cathaoirleach of the Fleadh Youth Committee said: “I have been overwhelmed but not surprised by the numbers taking part in the event. The commitment and interest shown by the children at the outset and the encouragement and support provided by their teachers was a sure recipe for the success of ‘Cas Amhrán’.
‘Cas Amhrán’ will be featured on the Gig Rig on Wednesday 15th August.
The volunteers at the O’Raghallaigh’s - which looked splendid on the day - played a huge role in the organisation of the day and deserve great credit for their assistance.
