BELLEWSTOWN STUDENTS HIT THE PRESSES!

-

STUDENTS from 3rd and 4th classes in Scoil Naomh Treasa in Bellewstown have produced a wonderful new book on the history of their home area, a ‘Factastic History of Bellewstown’.

Lauren Hartford produced a great cover, Ava Moore Sutcliffe did and the back, and working with author Debbie Thomas, the students gathered some magical facts about their parish.

Some older residents also chipped in with some details and the book is a mix of facts and stories, all well worded and researched.

One of the local places featured is the Herd’s Cottage,. which was built in 1874.

Hilltown House, they explained, was owned by the Boylans who arrived in the early 1700s. The estate grew to 3,000 acres in the late 1800s.

The family were known as good employers and hosted Christmas Day events for the workers.

The Bellewstown Races get a mention of course, including Yellow Sam.

The book was produced as part of the Teacher/Artist in Schools Partnership Project and a lot of work went into it, especially by Deputy Principal Elaine Light and Principal, Bernadette McGuinness.
