1932 link goes with death of Webbs

YET another link with the Louth team which won the 1932 All-Ireland Junior Football Championsh­ip title has been severed in the death of Mr . Peter ( Webbs) Martin from Congress Avenue, Drogheda.

Although he had been in failing health for some time past, he was out and about on the Saturday previous to his death and his demise came as a shock to his wife, family and friends.

Popularly known as “Webbs,” the deceased was one of seven players from the former Owen Roes Club oh the team which defeated London-Irish in the 1932 title match as a follow-up tu a victory over Roscommon in the home final. He also won a Louth Junior championsh­ip medal with the Roes and a senior championsh­ip medal with the Wolfe Tones.

Popular on and off the field, “Webbs” had his best games as an attacking half-back and in a colourful career figured prominentl­y in the then very popular Louth-Meath Cairnes* Cup matches in senior football.

Joining the Army’s 5th Battalion in his youth, he won many trophies with the footbail and basketball teams. On his leaving the Army he joined Cement Ltd . where he worked until his retirement about three years ago.

The funeral of this great Drogheda and Louth Gael took place on St. Patrick’s Day to Calvary Cemetery following Mass in St Mary’s Church.

The large and representa­tive attendance testified to the esteem in which the deceased had been held. The coffin was draped in the colours of the Wolfe Tones G F.C. and the club provided a guard of honour. Rev. J. Lynch, C.C.. officiated.
