Rounding up the crowds for next week’s Collon sheepdog trials

- BY ALISON COMYN

IT’S that time of year again when one person and their dog will take to the fields of Collon to raise money for some local charities!

The sixth annual charity sheepdog trials on the Power family farm in Ballymacan, Collon will take place this year on Sunday 15th July 9am to 9pm.

It is a great opportunity for everyone to see the talented dogs – and their equally talented owners – in action, and support two worthy charities in the process.

Chosen charities this year are Boyne Fisherman’s Rescue and Recovery Service, and My Canine Companion, a dog for Jacob.

“This is a great family day out, and it is also free, which you very rarely get these days,” says Mary Power, on whose farm the event is held.

“As well as the trials, there will be stalls, pony rides and face-painting, so there will be something to suit all age groups.”

Based in Drogheda, Co. Louth, the Boyne Fishermen’s Rescue and Recovery Service provides a 24-hour emergency rescue service along the River Boyne, 365 days a year.

Members of the service are highly trained and gain externally accredited qualifications in a range of skills, such as boat handling, first aid, VHF radio operation, navigation, search management and self-rescue.

They rely heavily on fundraising and donations to stay afloat!

My Canine Companion is a national charity founded in 2011, this year, the trials will support A Dog for Jacob.

“Jacob is a delightful little boy, who has autism, and we are raising funds for his assistance dog Ola, who is already being trained in Cork,” explains Mary.

“Jacob will really benefit from having this assistance dog, but they cost a substantial amount of money to train.”

The event has grown substantially from its humble beginnings on George Power’s farm in 2012, and there are now men and women from all over the world, including women from Austria and Germany, competing.

“Competition is high for the George Power Memorial Cup, which is in memory of my late father, and is the prize at the Open Class,” says Mary.

“We also have to mention the generosity of Patrick Lawlor of Dunlavin, and his sponsorship means we only have to take donations at the door, so no one gets fleeced!” Raffle ticket will be on sale throughout the day for some great prizes donated by local businesses.

Families are welcome, and refreshments will be served with a free barbecue in what’s hoped will be glorious July sunshine.
