Sharon and the boys put on a truly professional performance
IN the modern era when most of our present day children are preoccupied with digital games and gadgets, how refreshing it was to listen to a group of boys, the Drogheda Boys Choir, deliver an evening of such serenity in choral singing.
Parents, families, friends and guests were enchanted by the Drogheda Boys Choir who completed their first season with a beautiful recital recently in the Holy Family Church in Ballsgrove. Pride was in abundance among the parents on hearing their sons sing so beautifully in choral harmony to bridge a 60 year gap of boys choral singing in Drogheda.
Their lovely entry into the church and onto the altar to the strains of “Panis Angelicus” set the trend for a marvellous evening of choral singing which brought huge admiration from the invited audience. This new addition to the burgeoning talent which now abounds in Drogheda has to bring the town into the higher echelons of culture and entertainment in the country.
The Musical Director of this choir is none other than Sharon Gaynor, herself, a prodigious talent and a singer who is nationally renowned. She has shown that she possesses musical talent beyond her fabulous voice. Her tuition was certainly borne out in the splendid performance of her choral students during a marvellous evening.
There were also special moments when Christian Campbell, at just six years of age, led the choir as the soloist in “You Raise Me Up“to the utter astonishment of the audience. Later in the recital, the three Connor brothers were to the forefront in a fantastic rendition of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”. The synchronisation of the harmonies here was indicative of the choirs ability and their musical tuition.
At the end of the boys recital there was a wonderful poignant moment when long serving chorister & local tenor, Owen Rafferty introduced three members of the former St Peter’s Boys Choir from sixty years ago, which included himself along with Tom Murphy and Jim Reynolds to sing “Ecce Panis Angelorum” who were joined by two of the present Drogheda Boys Choir, Alex Jordan and Liam Murray. This indeed was a most poignant and lovely interlude which was rapturously applauded by the audience. And will be joined by several guest peerformers for the occasion.
The Drogheda Boys Choir will open their new season in September when they will sing at a concert in St Peter’s COI Peter Street
The evening concluded with a short recital by the excellent Drogheda Male Voice Choir but there was no doubting, the occasion belonged to the wonderful boys of the Drogheda Boys Choir.
