Weather takes its toll on turnout

-

TNE continuing sunny weather ensured a very small attendance for the latest round of matches at Greenhills last Thursday night, but the members who did turn up were treated to some fine bowling.

Four games were played over seven ends, and first up were Josephine Moran and junior Megan Devin against Alice Leonard and junior Tadg Reilly.

The latter pairing had the early momentum and went three up after two ends. Josephine and Megan cut the deficit to one, but after attacking the head at every opportunity their opponents restored their three-shot lead with two ends to play.

Megan and Josephine stayed calm and focused, though, and after a productive penultimate end they levelled the score. With the momentum now in their favour, they showed great resilience and determination to grab the win at the death by one shot.

Peter Woods and Jack Howell were pitted against Jimmy Flood and Marie Maher, and first blood went to the latter pair as they went two up after three.

Peter and Jack then hit a purple patch to go three up with two ends remaining, but with some levely backhand and forehand shots Marie and Jimmy went into the last end only one down and a battle ensued.

With every shot vital the nerves were showing at this stage, but Peter and Jack held on to take the spoils by three shots.

Sean Donnelly and Eugene Mc Kenna took on Claire Woods and Val Haggans in what was always going to be a close encounter.

Over the course of the first two ends Claire and Val went ahead two up, only for Sean and Eugene to react very quickly and take a one-shot lead after three.

Claire and Val came out of the blocks firing in the next two ends, taking the lead two up, but Sean and Eugene went into overdrive in the last two ends to take victory against their luckless opponents by two shots.

In the final match John Hurley and Peter Woods clashed with Anna Farrell and Josie Moran, and the latter started the game with real purpose to go five up after three ends.

Peter and John, who weren’t playing badly, responded to cut the deficit down to one with two ends to play, only for Anna and Josie to hit back in the sixth end and double their lead to two.

In an exciting final end, though, Peter and John fired into the head at every opportunity to clinch victory by one shot despite a superb performance by the ladies.

The standout performers on the night were Anna Farrell, John Hurley, Eugene Mc Kenna and Claire Woods.

If unable to attend on a Thursday night, please contact any committee member. The draw will take place for partners at 8.30pm sharp and times of play are Thursday 7 to 8.15pm for juniors and 8.15 to 10.30pm for seniors.
