Praise for efforts of gardai in Dunleer

‘NOBODY DUG IN MORE THAN THE TWO LADS’ SAYS LOCAL COUNCILLOR

- By HUBERT MURPHY

THE role of the gardai in Dunleer has been praised by a local councillor who says they have put in ‘a hell of a shift’ in recent months.

‘I have to pay tribute to the gardai there,’ Cllr Colm Markey told a meeting of the Joint Policing committee in Dunleer.

‘Nobody dug in more than the two lads. They are always aware of things and are terribly well regarded,’ he stated.

He said there was no sergeant in Dunleer, and it was important to get resources into the area and into rural Mid Louth as a whole.

He said rebuilding ‘fractures’ in the community in Dunleer following recent events was paramount

Cllr Markey urged people to report crimes as it added to the efforts to bring in more resources for areas.

Responding, Supt Andrew Watters said he was ‘really, really impressed’ with the efforts of the gardai in Dunleer and their local knowledge had ‘ blown him away’.

He said their awareness of cars and houses was thorough and that the officers concerned were ‘fantastic’.

He said they were having a ‘serious look’ at increasing numbers in Dunleer.

Also speaking at the meeting, Gerry Adams TD asked if there were any figures for domestic violence incidents and that proper facilities were needed in stations for such situations.

The Supt said that figures were not available for domestic violence but he’d look at getting them for the next meeting.

With Collon station also reopening, Deputy Adams asked if it had dedicated facilities to which Supt Watters replied that a facility dealing with protection services was being planned for Castlebellingham and when it is up and running it will be ‘a huge benefit’.
