€8,000 worth of illegal tobacco seized in house

TOBACCO with an estimated value of €8,000 was discovered following a search of a house in Drogheda last Monday.

The operation began with Revenue Officers detecting the attempted importatio­n of unstamped tobacco at Dublin Airport Cargo Terminal. In a follow up operation, Revenue Officers seized two packages of unstamped tobacco following a search, carried out under warrant, of the private residence in Drogheda. Each package contained 7.5Kgs of unstamped ‘Flandria Virginia’ tobacco.

The retail value of the tobacco products is approximat­ely €8,000, representi­ng a potential loss to the Exchequer of €6,858. Investigat­ions are ongoing with a view to prosecutio­n.

These seizures are part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the shadow economy and the supply and sale of illegal tobacco products. €4,500 and Stg£6,170 in cash were also seized when two cars were stopped and searched at a ferry to Cherbourg, France.
