Stamullen NEW ARRIVALS

Congratulations and best wishes to the parents, guardians and extended families of the following children who were recently baptised in the parish. Connor Keenan and Ava Smyth.

FRUIT CROP

The wild herb and fruit crop may be seen in abundance on hedgerows across the parish and due to the extremely hot weather of late, many of the wild herbs and fruits have made an early appearance. Agricultural landowners and contractors are pretty busy at the moment also with acres upon acres of wheat and barley ready for harvesting. There is concern however that the potato crop may be seriously damaged as a result of having no rain for the last number of weeks, while there is also little or no growth on pasture-land, which in turn is having an effect on live stock.

BELLEWSTOWN RACES

There is no doubt that this year`s annual Bellewstown races attracted a much larger crowd than it has done in many a year. For the first time, the race meeting on the hill was run over four days and along with the great sunshine and hot weather, thousands of folk headed for this annual event throughout that four-day period. The social scene and activities on the hill, with friends and acquaintances perhaps only meeting up with each other at the annual races can often be tinged with emotion and sadness, as the ordinary, everyday folk who would annually visit the hill, are no longer with us and the `old-familiar-faces` are, unfortunately, disappearing fast. The beauty of the hill of Bellewstown and the stunning views of the surrounding countryside was something to behold at this year`s event and long may it continue.

BANG-GOES-A-SHILLING

Many of you would remember the old Bang goes a shilling Club across the parishes of Stamullen & Julianstown of yesteryear. The following is a list of both winners and promoters from this club from July and early August back in the great summer of 1968. £10 winners included Mary McCullen, Mrs. Reilly, Anne Sarsfield, John Mcken, Mrs. Boylan and Maggie Woods. The winners of £2.10-shillings and £1 notes included Dick Boshell, Declan McCullen, Nano Byrne, Matthews McCann, Nan Despard, Mattie Sarsfield, Maureen Sullivan, Pat Sarsfield, Kevin Reilly, Pascal Ryan, Ivan Curran, Richard Fitzharris, Ita Boylan, Mrs. Dunphy, Maggie Curtis, John Power, Oliver Brannigan, George King and May Caffrey. The promoters were B. Donovan, Mrs. McCourt, Noel Dunne, Vincent Thornton, Mrs. Fitzharris, P. Matthews, Anne Sarsfield, T. Doherty, Peter Russell and, of course, who could ever forget the renowned Maggie Woods.

On a last point of interest; the £10 winner of the week-ending, dated 22nd July 1968, went to a man named `Elvis Presley`, with the promoter being local man, Pat Connolly. Who was this man, who must have believed that he did indeed feel like the `King`-himself after he had won such a generous sum 50 years ago this coming week!
