Increased free parking needed for workers
Free car parks need to be extended in Drogheda as matter of urgency. The call is being made by a local councillor, who points out that parking used by workers in the town have been consistently full since pay parking recommenced last Wednesday.
Councillor Paul Bell has again highlighted the need to expand the capacity of the existing number of free car parking spaces having witnessed the overcrowding of the Mell and Donore Road car parks in response to the reactivation of pay parking bye laws on July 18th.
‘It was inevitable that the weakness in providing car parking for both workers and commuters would be exposed once pay parking became active again,’ said Cllr Bell.
‘Both Donore Road and Mell car parks were full very early in the morning. This is the first time since March that the capacity was stretched, and it is now time for additional spaces to be provided.’
He said that since the loss of the free car parking spaces in Scarlet Street which amounted to some 40 spaces, he has campaigned for additional spaces to be provided by expanding the free car park on Donore Road. which would be primarily aimed at supporting workers and commuters.
‘I am encouraged that Louth County Council are conducting an urgent feasibility study into providing an additional 90 free car parking spaces on the site of the Donore Road car park, and that the Mell car park had been examined for expansion and awaiting a report.’
