Drones could spot dumping
LOCAL councillor Conor Keelan sought an update at the monthly meeting of Louth County Council on his suggestion that the local authority use drone technology in the battle against illegal dumping.
He wondered if there had been any success on acquiring drone technology to assist the litter wardens in tackling and discouraging illegal dumping, particularly along Border areas.
Director of Service Ms Emer O’Gorman said there was no scheme for them to get funding for drone technology at the moment.
She also warned that they could run into difficulties with GDPR.
However, she said that drone technology can be effective in taking prosecutions for illegal dumping but only if the registration number of the vehicle being used can be detected.
