Ryanair should step up and honour commitments - Munster

Sinn Féin Spokesperson for Transport Imelda Munster TD has said that Ryanair should step up to the plate and honour its commitment to recognise unions, in order to put a stop to industrial action by workers at the company.

Ryanair pilots who are members of the Irish Airline Pilots’ Association (IALPA) are on strike today and have indicated that further action is possible.

Deputy Munster said, ‘Ryanair made a commitment to recognise unions and Ryanair needs to work with unions and come to an agreement to fulfil its obligations as an employer and its commitments regarding union recognition’.

‘Ryanair has a very poor record when it comes to workers’ rights. The chickens are coming home to roost now, with this strike, but also other planned strikes at the company in some European countries amongst cabin crew and ground staff.’

‘ This is an ideological struggle. Ryanair, despite promising to engage with unions, can’t bring itself to do so. Recognising seniority won’t cost the company money. It’s not a huge ask from the workers.’

‘Ryanair now has to decide if it wants to inflict further disruption on passengers or if it wants to stand up and take responsibility, and end this dispute. It is not fair on the travelling public that their summer holidays are at risk of disruption because of Ryanair’s poor attitude towards its workers.’

‘I am urging the company to step up and come to a resolution with unions.’
