Louth libraries funding for Science Week
LOCAL FACILITIES BENEFIT FROM SHARE OF €450K
Week festivals or events during Science Week, which takes place from the 11th – 18th November year. The funding provided through the SFI Discover Programme will support 12 festivals and 15 events across the country.
“As the world around us continues to evolve, encouraging more people in Ireland to explore science-related careers is a priority for this Government, “said Minister Humphreys at the launch.
“However, to achieve this goal, we must ensure that our citizens have access to science at a local level. The investment in the Science Week festivals and events will provide an opportunity to reach new audiences in locations right across the country. Crucially, many of these festivals reach areas where we know there are lower levels of engagement in science.”
Yvonne O’Brien, Louth County Librarian is delighted Louth Libraries were successful in their funding application to Science Foundation Ireland and is looking forward to a fun and innovative programme of events in Louth during November. The ethos of Louth Libraries is equality of access to information, literacy, learning, job seeking and health and well-being for all.
All the community will have the opportunity to experience the programme, as an exciting, socially cohesive, community driven experience. Collaboration within the community is key to the successful roll-out of such a programme. We will engage with high profile businesses and local industries in the county. Such collaborations will allow the opportunity to experience STEM as applied in real life, making science real, said Yvonne.
Events include 3D printing workshops, taster coding sessions; and workshops on everything from the science of gin to kite making, cyber bullying and mandala art.
