One-eyed terrier Mutt loved his life at the Tegral Pipes factory

-

TEGRAL Pipes is a spot with some great stories of days gone by, but how many workers remember ‘Mutt’ - the one-eyed terrier.

Apparently back in the 1970s, Mutt arrived at the plant near Greenhills and never left.

He wandered onto the shop floor and spent his days there.

He made his presence felt as soon as he clocked in. The first to feel this presence were four cats who, up until then, had enjoyed the run of the factory. But Mutt, a confirmed cat hater, made short shrift of them.

It was in a cat fight that the game little terrier lost his eye. He got lifts around the place and was particularly fond of a ride on the huge hoist. He was a favourite with everyone and, at weekends he was treated to a shampoo and shower in the company’s shower room. Each day the workers fed him scraps from their lunches.

Mutt, caused some dismay when he went mising for one day. Anxious enquiries were made and it was found he had spent the day at the Hauni factory on the south side of the town.

“But he obviously preferred us,” said one of his fans at the time,, Tom Kerr. “He had a look around up there and then came back to stay with us.”
