With 12 minutes on the clock, Jason Carroll’s attempt at a point hit the upright and the ball fell to Dean Stanfield who was held up by Joes defender Stefan Potts before the ball broke to the ace predator Niall Conlon who rifled the ball ruthlessly past Seamus Quigley to put his side 1-1 to 0-3 to the good.

Jack Mulligan, Conall Smyth (free) and Craig Doherty all found their range superbly for the Joes with Doherty’s point the pick of the scores as he won the kick out before curling the ball stylishly over the bar.

Niall Conlon’s free was the sole response for the O’Connells, but Jackie Agnew split the posts from the right half forward position moments later to increase that lead to two.

The Joes responded to Conlon’s goal with points from Conall Smyth and Jack Mulligan who picked up an injury in an awkward collision in the second half. That levelled matters in the last 10 minutes of the first half. Stuart Osbourne raised the final white flag of the opening half to
