WOLFE Tones outclassed Cuchulainn Gaels at The Grove on Friday evening as they booked their place in the Junior Championsh­ip quarter-finals.

Aside from a brief spell in the opening ten minutes, this was a rather one-sided affair as the well-drilled Tones, who also had a good eye for the target, were rarely threatened by the Omeath men. From the moment Marc Lugoye put his side four points clear with the first goal of the game on 11 minutes, the outcome was never in doubt and the Drogheda men cruised to victory.

Lugoye would go on to complete his hat-trick with a quick-fire double in the second half, including a sublime strike on 57 minutes when he chipped the ball into the top corner. In a match that was low on entertainm­ent it was a rare moment of quality.

A disappoint­ing evening began in worrying circumstan­ces for the North Louth men as Martin Ward suffered a head injury in an accidental collision with less than a minute on the clock and the half back was later taken away by ambulance.

Despite that setback, the Gaels began in encouragin­g fashion and had the first point on the board through a Jordan Loye free on five minutes.

However, they were unable to build on that score as the lively Jamie McCormack and Darren Weldon replied, before Lugoye pounced to find the net on 11 minutes. McCormack (2) and Smith added points to make it 1-5 to 0-1 after 15 minutes.
